ScenarioThis lab has two parts

One part is open and above board the other is somewhat surreptitious

3Slide4

Part One

Draw a diagram in Microsoft Visio that shows a telecommunications networkUse a standard symbol for each part and label each part on the diagramThis can be a LAN or WAN at your workplace, if you work, or in your home

If you do not have a LAN or WAN in your home, you need to build one

Part One

There is no better way to learn, than to setup your own LAN at homeBe prepared to discuss this network in class on the day this lab assignment is due

Part TwoThis is the somewhat surreptitious part

I assume many of you do not work with a LAN or WAN at your place of work or in your homeThat is why you are in this classSo, I want you to go and meet the people at your workplace who do control the network there

6Slide7

Part TwoThis can be the Local Area Network or a Wide Area Network

Draw a diagram in Microsoft Visio that shows what this network looks likeUse a standard symbol for each part and label each part on the diagram

Be prepared to discuss this network in class on the day this lab assignment is due

7Slide8

Part TwoThere are two reasons for this part of the lab assignment

The first reason is to let the class see the different kinds of networks they will encounterThe second reason is to give you an excuse to introduce yourself to the people who are doing the kind of work you hope to do in the future

Part Two

As I said the first day of class, it is first what you know that gets you aheadBut it is certainly true that who you know makes a big difference as well

You now have a perfect excuse for going and bothering these peopleJust say that I made you do it

9Slide10

Part TwoSay that you are so sorry to bother them, but you will get a bad grade in the course if you do not get this information for me

Hopefully from this encounter you can build an ongoing relationship and thereby gain that constantly elusive first bit of real life on the job experience with a LAN or WAN

10Slide11

Part TwoI will not insist that everyone turn in something for Part Two, since not everyone has way to do this

But if you have this type of opportunity and you do not avail yourself of it, you are only cheating yourself
