WEAVES
Plain
– over one, under one,
Example fabrics- muslin, voile, broadcloth, percale, taffeta, and crepe.
Ribbed weave – a rib is created by a thicker filling yarn, example fabric – poplin, faille.
Basket weave – two or more yarns are grouped each direction (over two under two, ) example fabric – oxford clothSlide3
Twill Weave
The weave creates parallel diagonal ridges on the fabric surface. The filling yarn passes over two or more yarns then under one. Each successive row shifts to the right or left to give diagonal lines. Example fabric = denim chino, gabardine. Slide4
Satin Weave
Has yarn that floats on the surface to give it a luster or shine. Example fabric = satin.Slide5
Pile Weave
Creates a raised surface of loops or yarn ends. The surface is called pile. Example fabrics – velvet, velveteen, velour, corduroy, or terrycloth.Slide6
Jacquard and Dobby Weaves
Design or patterns woven into the fabric.
Fabric examples = bird’s-eye, and honeycomb are examples of dobby weave
Intricate designs –jacquard weave, fabric examples = damask and brocadeSlide7
Knits - Weft
Single – made with only one set of yarns , example fabric =jersey, purl knits (stretch in both directions)
Double knits – two yarns used and two sets of needles. They are heavier, firmer, and sturdier than single knits, Slide8
Knits - Weft
Most common is tricot knit – often used in women’s underwear.
Raschel
knits – an extra yarn is used to stitch aa a texture or pattern design, open lacy knits.Slide9
Bonded or Laminated Fabric
Interlocking fibers with heat and moisture and an adhesive. Felt and inner facing are examples. Slide10
Lace and Nets
Fabric made by twisting or looping threads or yarns together.
