Antisocial personality disorder.
People with antisocial personality disorder do not have poor social skills, it is a condition where individuals ignore the rights of others and do not use socially acceptable behaviour.
They do not abide the law, they lie, steal and can be aggressive. They find it difficult to hold a job and meet responsibilities as a spouse or parent. They can have difficulty making or keeping friends, but they can also be witty and charming. APD affects 3% of males and 1% of females. About 75% of the prison population suffer from this disorder.Slide7
Case Study – Helen.
Helen is 30 years old. When she was a teenager she was often in trouble in school and at home. As an adult she has been unable to hold down a job. She has little empathy making friendships but is able to manipulate others into getting what she wants. She was arrested for shoplifting but managed to persuade the police officer that she had not been stealing the item but had forgotten to pay.
Think about this case study – Do you think Helen has APD? Why? Slide8
Characteristics of APD.
APD cannot be diagnosed until the individual is at least 18 years old, but they will have been showing this pattern of behaviour since they were 15. To be diagnosed with APD the individual will show 3 or more of the following characteristics;
Not following norms and laws of society.
Being deceitful by lying, conning others and using aliases.
Being irritable and aggressive, often involved in physical fights or assaults.
Being careless about their own safety or the safety of others.
Being irresponsible, failing to hold down a job or pay back money owed to others.
Lacking remorse by being indifferent to, or finding reasons for, hurting, mistreating or stealing from others.
These symptoms tend to be at their worst when the individual is in their teens or early 20’s but does get better with age.Slide9
