slide1. Theme this year:
#WBW2021 will focus on how breastfeeding contributes to the survival, health and wellbeing of all, and the imperative to protect breastfeeding worldwide.

Survival:
Breastfeeding significantly improves the survival of infants, children and mothers

Health and wellbeing:
Breastfeeding significantly improves the health, development and wellbeing of infants and children as well as mothers, both in the short and long term 1st- 7th August 2021
slide2. Focussing on the survival element of the campaign…

Preterm infants are more vulnerable to infections and providing them with breastmilk can help reduce their risk of:
Necrotising Enterocolitis
Enteral feed intolerance
Late onset sepsis
Chronic lung disease
Retinopathy of prematurity
Re-admission

Breast milk for preterm infants promotes improved neuro-developmental outcomes, it contains the growth hormone and anti-inflammatory factors. It can even be used for mouth care and pain relief! 1st- 7th August 2021
slide3. For NICU babies: EARLY, FREQUENT, EFFECTIVE EXPRESSING

EARLY : within 2 hours of birth
FREQUENT : 8-10 times in 24 hours, including at least once in the night (no long gaps)
EFFECTIVE : By hand or by pump

WHY?
Early, frequent and effective expressing in the first 2 weeks of life is essential to prime the mothers breasts
It is highly important to ‘switch on’ all of the milk making cells in the first weeks to ensure optimal long term milk supply 1st- 7th August 2021
slide4. What do we mean by EFFECTIVE?
Great hand expressing technique (to collect colostrum and high fat milk at the end of a pumping session)
Breast pump use from day 0 (for stimulation initially, and then to collect milk)
Ensure correct use of breast pump (double pump)
Ensure correct funnel sizes
Stimulate several flows of milk (massage, double pump, massage, double pump)
Ensure comfort
Kangaroo mother care/close proximity to baby/ momentos
Use v-create if mother unable to visit baby 1st- 7th August 2021
slide5. The POWER of COLOSTRUM for preterm babies 1st- 7th August 2021 High levels of immunoglobulins, particularly lactoferrin
Strong anti-inflammatory effect
Stimulates gut growth
Acts as a laxative helping passage of meconium, reducing the risk of neonatal jaundice
High in Na and Kcl, which often preterm babies are lacking due to their immature kidneys
Initiates acidic pH environment to help friendly bacteria grow
Sets baby up for life outside the womb
