While calorie restriction (CR) is the gold standard for interventions that prolongs mammalian lifespan and healthspan, adhering to reduced calorie diets is difficult for humans. Recent findings by our lab and others have shown that protein restriction (PR) promotes health and longevity in mice, and that lower consumption of dietary protein is associated with longevity and health in humans. Our lab has found that the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are key mediators of metabolic health and longevity, with restriction of all three or specific BCAAs promoting metabolic health, fitness, and lifespan in mice. We and others have also determined that dietary BCAAs are negatively associated with metabolic health in humans..
