A gifted young performer in an U14 squad requests individual, one-to-one coaching even though they are part of a group

Some children ask to visit your house to see your collection of sports medals & trophies, & to borrow some training manuals.You are asked to attend a training weekend where, for supervisory reasons, you are allocated a sleeping area with a group of children.A new trainer uses inappropriate language, which the children repeat, making fun of other groups in a loud, suggestive manner.You are asked to train a young adult with additional special needs, but are not given the time to discuss her specific requirements, either with the young adult herself or her carer.

A child in your care receives a bang to his head. He appears to be fine, so you forget to inform his parents & omit to complete an accident report.During a coaching session, a young performer begins to suggest that they really like you & would like to meet you for a coffee.

You are asked to take a group of children to an away fixture by yourself.

Dealing with incidents

It

is not always easy to distinguish poor practise, both accidental and deliberate, from abuse. Therefore, it is

NOT

your responsibility to decide whether or not child abuse has taken place. It

IS

your responsibility to act on any concerns by reporting them to your Club Safeguarding Officer.

If

any of the following occur you should report this immediately:

 

If you accidentally hurt a child

If he/she seems distressed in any manner

If a child appears to be sexually aroused by your actions

If a child misunderstands or misinterprets something you have done

If a child discloses an incident to you, remember they have done so because they trust you, so:

Getting Help

If

a child is in immediate danger/risk of life, call the police.

All

incidents & disclosures must be reported, in the first instance, to your Club Safeguarding Officer.

They

will ask you to complete an incident form, the matter will then be reported to SLSGB and the statutory authorities, where appropriate.

Further

action may follow, on advise from the statutory authority and internal case team.

Attend ‘Good Practice & Child Protection’ workshop

(available through Sports Coach UK, Local Authorities & CSPs)
