USSR (20 minutes)

LITERATURE CIRCLES: Mortal ENGINES Form groups of 4. Please make sure you are all facing each other. In your groups, please discuss your thoughts on the novel Mortal Engines . In your discussion, please answer the following questions: What part of the story was the most entertaining/memorable to you? Were there any moments that surprised you? Which character(s) did you find to be the most interesting? Do you wish the story had developed in a different way?

Static vs dynamic characters

What do we mean by ‘static’ and ‘dynamic’? Static – adj. lacking in movement or change; frozen Dynamic – adj. characterised by change; progressive. After reading these two definitions, what do you think static and dynamic characters are?

What is a static character? A static character is one whose personality or world view does not change over the course of the story. They are already set in their ways. They may experience a physical journey or adventure, but they do not experience an internal journey.

Here are some examples of static characters in media Can you think of other examples?

What Is a dynamic character? Unlike static characters, dynamic characters undergo an internal journey. Dynamic characters begin the story believing or seeing things in a certain way. The events of the story and/or interactions with other characters cause them to change their worldview. Many protagonists are dynamic characters, but supporting characters can be dynamic as well.

Here are some examples of dynamic characters Pick one of these characters (one that you know well). What are they like at the beginning of the story, and how have they changed by the end? Write 1-2 sentences comparing these two different stages of their character.

There is a name for a type of story that is focuses on the maturation and character development of the protagonist. Do you know what it is? Hint: It begins with the letter ‘B’ Answer: Bildungsroman

BILDUNGSROMAN This is also known as a ‘coming-of-age’ story. Describes a story that focuses on the internal growth and maturation of the protagonist as they set out to find the answers to life’s questions. The character grows and changes as they encounter new situations and various challenges to their beliefs. These types of stories usually involve a conflict between the protagonist and their society In many of these stories, the protagonist is an adolescent.
