What is a Jesuit Identity? How do we bring these ideals to life? Cura Personalis – Care for the individual personMagis – A Latin phrase meaning more or better

Goa-

A state in Western

India

where

St. Francis Xavier traveled to experience new opportunities, new cultures and new customs

. Also known as CORE 101

Manresa -

A town in northeastern Spain where Ignatius Loyola

had

a powerful spiritual experience that led to his founding of

the Society of Jesus or

Jesuits. Also known as our 4 day August orientation.

Guided Pathway through Jesuit idealsSlide5

A little more about Goa/CORE 101:Required non-credit course for all first year students

Instructors are University administrators

Meets 6 times in fall and 6 times in spring semesters

An extension of Manresa

Serves as

touch points

for first year students to ensure they are adjusting to University life and discussing sticky situations

Students will select their CORE 101 course when they register for classesSlide6

High School and College:2013 study by the Higher Education Research Institute revealed that 59% of incoming first year students at a broad range of colleges and universities reported spending fewer than 6 hours per week doing homework during their senior year.

97% of these students graduated with a

3.0 or higher GPA

.

required to help students ‘catch up’

reading

Critical

Surface Learning

may suffice for good grades

Application level

of learning required; concepts are analyzed

Assignments are structured

with explicit instructions

Assignments may

require interpretation; no rubric

Late work is permitted

Students must follow syllabusSlide8

Surface Learning

Are you prepared to answer quiz questions about this soccer ball?Slide9

Recognizing is not the same as knowing and understanding…1. Compare the black shapes to the white shapes.2. Justify the black and white coloring.3. Write a mathematical formula to find how many seams connect the leather pieces.Slide10

Adopting a Creator MindsetOn Course, by Skip Downing, 8th edition

Mindset = one’s general beliefs or attitudes, a set of one’s perceptions, the ‘lens’ through which one sees a situation

Victim

Creator

Blaming

Seeking Solutions

Complaining

Taking action

Repeating same behaviors

Taking a

new approach

Focus on weaknesses

Focus on how to improve

“I’ll try to do better.”

“To do better next time, I will…”Slide11

High School and College:Looking back, first year students students often wish they would have:

Used supports they had in high school (medications, therapies, classroom accommodations, social supports/clubs)

Email

:

disabilityservices@xavier.edu

Asked for help as soon as they felt they were falling behind

Understood the metrics (GPA and completion rate) related to their financial aid and 4 year graduation (15 credit hours per semester)

Managed their time more efficiently
