CHAPTER 2: Energy and Matter: Transcript
Physical and Chemical Properties Physical and Chemical Changes Chemistry the study of matter its composition structure and properties its transformations both chemical and physical. Matter and Change. What is Matter?. Matter. is anything that takes up space and has mass.. Mass. is the amount of matter in an object.. Mass. is resistance to change in motion along a smooth and level surface.. Section 1: What are Waves. SWBAT: . Explain . the relationship among waves, energy and matter. Science Starter. 1. Name . 3-5 types of . waves.. 2. What . do you think creates waves on the ocean?. When you are relaxing on an air mattress in a pool and someone does a cannonball dive off the diving board, you suddenly find yourself bobbing up and down.. This . powerpoint. will show you the basics of dark matter and dark energy . Their place in the universe . By Jordan . Ilori. . DARK MATTER. Dark matter is a type of matter hypothesized in astronomy and cosmology to account for a large part of the mass that appears to be missing from the universe. Dark matter cannot be seen directly with telescopes; evidently it neither emits nor absorbs light or other electromagnetic radiation at any significant level. Instead, the existence and properties of dark matter are inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. According to the Planck mission team, and based on the standard model of cosmology, the total mass–energy of the known universe contains 4.9% ordinary matter, 26.8% dark matter and 68.3% dark energy. Thus, dark matter is estimated to constitute 84.5% of the total matter in the universe and 26.8% of the total content of the universe.. Science, Matter, Energy, and Systems. Scientists use a variety of methods to learn about how the physical world works.. The methods fall into a general process.. Science is used to search for order in nature.. &. Matter and Energy. . Main Idea. You will be able to . demonstrate. . an understanding of the properties of matter and energy and their interactions.. [8 questions on STAAR]. Matter has measurable physical properties. . Science. . is an endeavor to discover how nature works. It has limitations and. . hypothesis. . are tentative and testable statements that must be capable of being supported or not supported by observational evidence.. Matter. -. anything that has mass and takes up space. . . Properties of Matter . -Matter can have many different properties or characteristics. -. Chemistry. . is the study of the properties of matter and how it changes. 2-1 Energy . 2-2 Temperature . 2-3 Matter . 2-4 Elements and Compounds . 2-5 Mixtures . 2-1 Energy. Name 3 basic forms of nrg. State the law of conservation of nrg. Need for nrg. Heat water for cooking, bathing, etc.. Matter and Energy What is matter? Matter and Energy What is matter? It's what everything that occupies space and has mass is made of And everything like that is made out of chemical elements There are 92 naturally occurring chemical elements, and a number of synthetic ones Honors Chemistry Matter and Energy MATTER is anything that has mass and volume. Do you know ALL the states of matter? Kinetic Molecular Theory of Matter Assumptions: All matter consists of particles, such as, atoms, molecules, formula units. Matter Chapter 2.1 Sept 22, 2015 Objective: Distinguish between elements and compounds and categorize materials as pure substances or mixtures Lab safety: do not touch or taste anything without permission that is not yours Mono Lake. Terminal Lake (water flows in, but it doesn’t flow out). Alkaline – water picks up salts and minerals and deposits them in lake. Mono brine shrimp and Mono Lake alkali fly support migrating birds (sandpipers, gulls and flycatchers). Honors. Chemistry. Guiding Questions. Why do substances boil or freeze at different temperatures?. . Why do we put salt on the roads in the winter? . Why does sweating cool us? . What is energy? . How do we measure energy? . Labs done so far for . ch. . 3 sections 1 and 2:. Distilled wood and related read of temperatures with plateaus for substances produced. Distilling . solution X (BP/CP –evaporation/condensation).
