In 2009, the Unity College Liberal Learning Task Force (composed of multiple faculty from different disciplines) recommended that the College explore the possibility of online programming.In December 2012,

responding to the Task Force, the Unity College Distance Learning Task Force (5 faculty and 3 staff) was convened and charged with exploring distance learning at Unity.In April of 2013, the Distance Learning Task Force recommended “the adoption of a well-planned, well-executed, mission-driven distance learning initiative at Unity College, that embodies and enhances the Sustainability Science framework of the

college.”

The 2013 Distance Learning Task Force’s report envisions a future in which Unity has 500 distance learning students in a wide range of certificate and degree programs. In its Executive Summary, the report states that “Unity College seeks to implement a distance learning program for three overlapping purposes:

A) advancing our mission by delivering new and interesting programs to new and diverse audiences, B) enhancing our current offerings for existing types of students, and C) increasing revenues and other resources.”

September of 2013: The Commission on Institutions of Higher Education continued Unity College’s accreditation and recommended that prior to its next evaluation the College implement:

“strategic initiatives to diversify revenue streams with an emphasis on new online and graduate level programing.”

2014The College started offering online undergraduate courses. This began as a partnership with Thomas College, the latter offering online business courses to our students with Unity College offering environmental science courses to Thomas students.

2014The Graduate /Undergraduate Online Task Force (GUGO) was launched with 15 members, including many faculty and staff. GUGO worked on policies, protocols, procedures, and other decisions necessary for the launch of the online programs.

In April of 2015:NECHE approved the Substantive Change proposal from Unity College to offer distance education programming at the Master’s level, specifically three tracks of a Master’s of Professional Science: Sustainable Natural Resource Management, Sustainability, and Ecology.

In October 2016, Unity College successfully launched the MPS program with two tracks: Sustainability Science 2) Sustainable Natural Resource Management. Unity College enrolled ten students in the initial cohort and another cohort of ten began their program in January, 2017.

Unity College Sustainable Education Business Units (SEBU’s) were formed

Unity College: Distance Education (DE)

The SEBU focused primarily on remote, hybrid, and online educational programs, such as graduate and undergraduate online initiatives. Established August 12, 2016

Audience: Working Adults

Unity College: Flagship (F)

The SEBU consisting of the primarily educational and residential programs based at 90 Quaker Hill Rd., Unity, ME; and its subsidiary programs and extensions. Established August 12, 2016

Audience: Traditional 18-21 year old

Unity College: Hybrid Learning (HL)

The SEBU focused primarily on low-residency, hybrid educational programs and its subsidiary programs and extensions.

Established May 8,

2020.

Audience: Traditional 18-21 year old wanting flexible modalities

Unity College: Sustainable Ventures (SV)

The SEBU consisting of the non-tuition-revenue-generating entrepreneurial units that are not individually at scale to be their own SEBU. Established August 15, 2019

The independence of the SEBU allowed Distance Education at Unity College to finally take off!

July 2017: NECHE approved a Substantive Change proposal from Unity College requesting the addition of the Sustainable MBA, two additional Professional Science Master’s tracks (Environmental GIScience and Conservation Law Enforcement

), and two certificates.

October 2017: Hosted an on-site evaluator from the Commission to review the distance education offerings. This visit was successful. The evaluator commended Unity College on its robust financial investment

in distance education, dedicated leadership and faculty, well-developed courses, and detailed academic and administrative procedures for students.

Sustainable Business ManagementStarted with 17 Undergraduate students in that FA -2 term. In December received accreditation for all 4 programs.
