Funeral Planning – Nothing New Slide4

The Greeks knew about how to bury their dead. The

body of the deceased was prepared to lie in state, followed by a procession to the resting place, either a single grave or a family tomb.

Funeral Planning – Nothing New The Romans were the first to bury ashes in glass urns which coincided with the introduction of glass.Slide5

During

M

edieval times, the lifespan of people was rather short and you were lucky if you made it into your early 30’s. They practised both burials and cremations during this time. Mass graves were used for poorer burials (predominantly due to the Plague).During Victorian times, mourning dress was introduced with fabrics and colours changing over time marking how long it had been since the death of a loved one. They also introduced the role of the Funeral Director, where funerals had previously been arranged by the Family and Church, the increasing pomp of funerals required some serious stage management.Funeral Planning – Nothing New Slide6
