Primary and secondary effects of tectonic hazards Primary effects - The initial impact of a natural event on people and property, caused directly by it, for instance the ground buildings collapsing following an earthquake. Secondary effects - The after-effects that occur as indirect impacts of a natural event, sometimes on a longer timescale, for instance fires due to ruptured gas mains resulting from the ground shaking.<br>
slide3. Immediate and long term responses to a tectonic hazard Immediate - a response in the days and weeks immediately after a disaster has happened. Immediate responses mainly involve search and rescue and helping the injured. Long-term - responses that go on for months and years after a disaster. It involves rebuilding destroyed houses, schools, hospitals, etc. It also involves kick-starting the local economy.<br>

slide5. THE KEY INFORMATION At 5:26am on 26th December 2003 there was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake that hit the ancient city of Bam, in SE Iran.

There was severe damage to the city of Bam because it is a poor and ancient city. The houses were built of mud bricks and as a result were not very strong.
In addition the earthquake struck late at night when people were asleep in their homes and as a result many were crushed by their mud brick houses collapsing.<br>

slide9. THE KEY INFORMATION At 3:36am on 24th August 2016 there was a 6.2 magnitude earthquake that hit the popular town of Amatrice and the surrounding villages.

There was significant damage to Amatrice because it is has a wide range of traditional buildings. The houses were built of mud bricks and as a result were not very strong.
In addition the earthquake struck at night (like Bam) so some people were trapped within their homes.
The earthquake hit during the summer holiday season meaning that there were more people in the town thanks to the tourism pull of Amatrice.<br>
