slide3. A common type of asexual reproduction found in nature is called Mitosis. Mitosis requires less energy than sexual reproduction does. Mitosis can occur in seconds and does not require a mate to reproduce. Sexual reproduction requires two compatible parents. It also requires time to produce the egg and sperm cells and then for fertilization to occur. Energy is required to find a compatible mate, produce sex cells, and for fertilization. Therefore Mitosis requires less energy than sexual reproduction does.
slide4. Cold air is more dense than hot air. When I filled a 9 centimeter diameter balloon with cold air the mass was 1 gram and when I measured the mass of the same size balloon with hot air it was 0.5 grams. When molecules are cooled they move closer together and when they are heated up they move farther apart. Because of this more molecules can fit into a balloon when the air going in is cold than when the air going in is warm.
slide5. Make your own claim, evidence, and reasoning
slide6. Brianna wanted to compare the densities of two different solids of the same size 6cm3 (same volume) to see which one was more dense. Solid A had a mass of 2 grams and Solid B had a mass of 0.5 grams. (Density = Mass/volume)
slide7. Claim Solid A is more dense then solid B
slide8. Evidence Solid A has a greater mass then solid B
When density is calculated, Solid A has a density of 0.33 and solid B has a density of 0.083
slide9. Reasoning Both have the same volume, but different mass
When density is calculated, Solid A has a density of 0.33 and solid B has a density of 0.083
Therefore, Solid A is more dense then Solid B
slide10. Sammy wants to see if plants really do grow better in sunlight. He uses 3 plants of the same type and size in 3 locations. Plant A is placed on Mrs. Shaw’s countertop in the center of the room, Plant B is placed inside the cabinet, and Plant C was placed near window sill. After 5 days Sammy measures the growth of each plant and documents it in the table below.
slide12. Claim Plants grow better in sunlight
slide13. Evidence Plants placed in different places (middle of room, in window, and in cabinet) with varying amount of sunlight
Measured plant height after 5 days
slide14. Reasoning Plant height of A and C were greater then B, which was inside a cabinet. Both A and C were exposed to some amount of sunlight.
A had the most growth because it received the most sunlight
Therefore, sunlight increases plant growth
slide15. Is this a valid experiment? Defend your answer. Yes
Sets up plants in different environments with varying amounts of light.
All the same type of plants and same size at the start.
Measures the plant height at the same time.
No
Plants really not in sunlight (outside), all are inside. Plants can grow in artificial light
Should measure plant height every day and amount of light being received
Where they watered with the same amount? How often?
Did they get the same type and amount of fertilizer? How often?
slide16. CER Graphing Worksheet Data:
As more heat is applied, the temperature increases.
This causes a change in state from solid to liquid to gas
slide17. CER Graphing Worksheet Claim
High temperatures cause a change in state
slide18. CER Graphing Worksheet Evidence
When little heat is applied, the temperature is low and it is solid
When medium heat is applied, causing a medium temperature, it is liquid
When high heat is applied, causing high heat, it is a gas
slide19. CER Graphing Worksheet Reasoning
As temperature increase, the state changed
Therefore, high temperatures cause a change in state
