Women in Organizations Women continue to increase representation in the workforce Recession 2 income families Continued barriers to advancement Despite increased participation, education, & government programs Career stagnation Visibility, scrutiny, pressure Magnified failures with limited attention to successes Emotional Expression & Organizations Organizations are emotionally anorexic Management attempts to regulate emotions Not acknowledged or valued Emotions define work relationships Emotional labor has received little review Organizational display rules dictate appropriate emotion display Emotion Regulation and Emotional Intelligence (EI) Limited studies on organizational conditions Emotion states or Emotion regulation Few studies on individual responses Minimal on defined groups, i.e. women Little on emotional awareness and emotional regulation of others Emotion regulation has focused on Young children & older adults Adaptive regulation strategies Emotion Regulation and Emotional Intelligence (EI)… EI viewed as a skill and/or ability test based Instruments & Measurement Good vs. Bad emotions Most individuals do not know what emotions compel actions Emotion Regulation is only 1 construct Most EI & gender studies have occurred outside of US Workplace relationships Job satisfaction Greater task identity, variety, & autonomy Does not fully explain the complexity of work relationships Employee-supervisors relationships affect Effectiveness Efficiency Job satisfaction Job performance Retention Statement of the problem Women bring unique emotional experiences & approaches Minimal research on emotional experiences of women professionals EI and emotion regulation Workplace relationships with supervisors Few phenomenological studies Research Question What is it like for women emotionally in their workplace relationships with supervisors?
