L1.5. Use simple formulae expressed in words for one or two-step operations
L1.5. Use simple formulae expressed in words for one or two-step operations One step: examples To write the time in the afternoon to a 24-hour format, add 12. 15cm + 12 14:00 9 pm 12 - 21:00 2 pm 150mm x 10 15m 100 ÷ 1500cm To convert metric measurements.
L1.5. Use simple formulae expressed in words for one or two-step operations Two step: example Jane uses a taxi to go to work, the taxi company charges 55p per mile and a 90p booking fee.
Number of miles ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Cost of trip 15 miles x 0.55 + 0.90 £9.15 Cost of trip~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Number of miles (£9.15 - 0.90) ÷ 0.55 15 miles
L1.5. Use simple formulae expressed in words for one or two-step operations.Now you try it! 8 x 7 = 56 6 x 7 + 9 = 42 + 9 = 51
06
L1.5. Use simple formulae expressed in words for one or two-step operations.Now you try it! 500 x 1.30 = $650 552.50 ÷ 1.30 = £425
07
L1.5. Use simple formulae expressed in words for one or two-step operations.Now you try it! 58 – 32 = 26 ; 26 ÷ 1.8 = 14.4 °C or 14°C 15 x 1.8 = 27; 27 + 32 = 59 °F
08
L2.3. Evaluate expressions and make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols
09
L2.3.1. Evaluate expressions given in words and symbols When hiring a taxi, you pay £2 for each mile you are travelling and a £1 booking fee.
How much will you pay if you travel 6.2 miles? = 6.2 x 2 + 1
= 12.4 +1
= £13.40p 2m + 1
10
L2.3.1. Evaluate expressions given in words and symbols In a shop a banana costs 6p and an apple costs 5p.
How much would you have to pay for 8 bananas and 7 apples? = 8 x 6 + 7 x 5
= 48 + 35
= £0.83p 6b +5a
L2.3. Evaluate expressions and make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols.
Now you try it! Helen is buying fruit in the local supermarket. To work out the total price of apples and pears she is buying, in £s, she is using this expression: 1.2a + 1.5p where a is for the number of kg of apples and p for the number of kg of pears.
What is the price of a kg of apples?
1.2 = £1.20 per kilogram of apples.
(b) What is the price of a kg of pears?
1/6 = £1.50 per kilogram of pears.
(c) How much would 5kg of apples and 3kg of pears would cost in total?
(1.2 x 5) + (1.5 x 3) = 6 + 4.5 = £10.50p
12
L2.3.2. Make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols To find the area of a rectangle we multiply the length by the width.
What would be the area of a rectangle be which is 13cm long and 3cm wide? 13cm 3cm = 13 x 3
= 39cm²
Ar = L x W
13
L2.3.2. Make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols To convert a temperature reading from °C to °F n you multiply the temperature in °C by 9/5 then add 32.
What is 15°C in °F? 15 x 9 + 32
5
= 59°F F = C x 9 + 32

L2.3.2. Make substitutions in given formulae in words and symbols.
Now you try it! The formula for converting metres to kilometres is: km = m ÷ 1000
How many km make 5205m?
How many m are 25.8km? 5.206km 25,800m The surface area of a sphere can be worked out using this formula: Work out the surface area of a sphere with a radius of 8cm. = 4 x π x r²
= 4 x 3.14 x 64
= 804.352cm³
