13. All about recipes AnswersMany children enjoy cook at home, and sometimes at school. Often children show the results of their wonderful culinary creations through videos, or pictures. These images and pictures are sometimes coupled with an essential piece of information.Every time you make a dish there is something important that you need to follow. It’s called a recipe. When cooking a dish there are always a set of instruction to stick to. The purpose of the recipe is to explain how to make the dish, step by step. The instructions within the recipe should be easy to understand. Anyone should be able to read them and recreate the dish with the exact same ingredients. They should be able to do the same steps. When you write the recipe, you must include all the things that you used to create the dish. It may seem silly, but you will need to list all the ingredients, and the amount of each ingredient, using the correct unit of measure. You may also want to include any equipment that will need to be set up beforehand.Next, be very clear about what the steps are. Provide as much detail as possible. Label each step with numbers or bullet points to show the order of the steps. Use words like first, next, then and finally (a range of linking words or phrases, including time connectives, or adverbials, to join sentences or paragraphs together). When writing instructions for your recipe you will need to write them as commands for the reader to follow, using action words such as cut, whisk, squeeze or chop. These are commonly referred to as ‘bossy verbs’ but they are formally known as imperative verbs. To add more detail to a complicated step, you may want to draw little pictures(illustrations), to make it clear to the reader. Remember, with any writing you must always consider your audience . Make sure to include any special tips. Read over what you have written. Make sure the instructions make sense. Ask a friend or relative to read your instructions. Check if they understand what to do.
