General Background
The first aired commercials lasted only for 10-30 seconds.
The purpose of advertising via television was to reach a larger audience at one given time.
The very first commercial was released be BULOVA WATCHES on July 1
st
, 1941 at a baseball game. It lasted for 10 seconds and only cost $4.00 to produce.Slide3
Characteristics
Many commercials started using animations in their logos that were either hand drawn or computer generated to make their product seem more appealing to the viewer.
Another appeal was the use of catch phrases or jingles that would stick in the viewer’s head.Slide4
United States
In North America, the Nielson Rating System determines how many people view a certain television program in order to know how much to charge for commercial air time.
In the 1960’s, an hour-long program would consist of a fifty-one minute show and nine minutes of commercials, whereas now an hour-long program would be only forty-two minutes long.Slide5
United Kingdom
On the British Broadcasting Channel, there are no commercials because it is paid for directly by the viewer.
On government funded channels, such as
Ofcom
, there are only seven minutes of commercials for one hour-long block.Slide6
South Korea
Under the current South Korean rules, terrestrial channels don’t show adverts in between different programs or during a program, but instead, they play them in between the intro and the start of the show and in between the end credits and the end of the show.Slide7
Introduction of Pop Music
The use of previously recorded music in commercials began in 1985 in a Burger King Commercial with the Aretha Franklin song “Freeway of Love.”
In some cases the original meaning of the song can be totally irrelevant or even completely opposite to the implication of the use in advertising.Slide8
