Learning Social Skills Through Natural and Paid Supports

The frontal cortex is responsible in the brain is responsible for social skills. In the brain on one who has an autism spectrum disorder, studies suggest that damage in the pre-frontal cortex is responsible for individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. While this is a theory, there is no known explanation which part of the brain contribute to a lack of social skills in one with autism. In the meantime, it is essential for one with and ASD to learn social skills. Yet, there is there is no single technique to instruct one with autism. In fact, one can master learning social skills through natural and paid supports. Though both supports share the same core goals, each has its own angle in teaching social skills.

What are natural supports?

These are supports that can be found among your family members, family friends, colleagues, members of the community.

Turn taking, Table manners, Eye contact, Anger management

What should be done?

Be honest and direct – pulling one to the side, mentors roleplay games, baby steps, practice going to parties, order from restaurants

What should not be done?Nagging, name calling, putting person on the spot, hints or sarcasmWhat are paid supports? – These are supports found among therapy sessions, support groups, mentor programs, age group social gatherings, animal therapyTurns talking, communicating more with rewards, theatrical models on facial expressions, how to socialize at parties; outings with supports, PEERS program, parental trainingWhat should be done- Pull to the side, clients sit on different table based on color code, one on one mentoring, check in and outWhat should not be done? Social Skills Through Animal Therapy : Learning maybe also brought out through form of equine therapy. This is based on the idea that individuals with ASD are similar to horses.
