THE 100 DAYS OF CONFLICT

The conflict between the Rwandan Tutsi and Hutu communities took place between April and June of 1994, and caused a massive genocide of an estimated 800,000 people, mostly consisting of Tutsis. The attacks began with two Hutu government officials being shot down in their plane, which Hutus believed was caused by the Rwandan Patriotic Front, a Tutsi rebellion group. The RPF, however, denies this. They believe the Hutus performed this act for an excuse to start war.

What is the problem? The Rwandan Genocide, also known as the 100 Days of Conflict, was the demise of over 800,000 people in Rwanda. Today, this area of Africa Rwanda is a part of has one of the lowest Human Development Indexes in the worldWhat are the causes of the problem? President Juvenal Habyarimana & Cyprien Ntaryamira of Burundi's plane being shot down, killing them both. An earlier event that possibly caused this was the Hutus overthrowing the Tutsi monarchy in 1959.What are the effects of the problem? Genocide against the Tutsi, which still effects 26% of the population to this day. The worlds largest peace keeping forces, such as the UN's organizations, could not change the damage that has already been done to Rwanda. What are the attempted solutions? Although the United States and UN eventually got themselves involved, the US only sent personnel carriers months after they were asked to by the UN. Not much was done to help the situation, although nowadays, speaking of ethnicity is illegal in Rwanda, which may be considered an attempt at helping.

The aftermath of this event continues to effect the country, as well as the rest of Eastern Africa. The Rwandan genocide and ethnic conflict in it are important to know about in understanding this region because it shows how war-driven the area is. The different ethnicities is not especially celebrated here, and instead causes disagreements and conflict, which is a consistent feature throughout not only the region but the rest of Africa.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE?
